  Generelle notater:

Niels Peter clutched Helene Mikkelsen's hand as they walked together onto the ship, the Monarch of the Sea. It was late April 1864, and they were finally fulfilling their dream of going to Zion in America. Their journey had begun weeks before as they left their homes in northern Denmark seeking a new life together. They left Copenhagen by ship, made their way to Germany, and then Liverpool, England, where they were now boarding the ship to America. There were 973 Saints on board from Scandinavia and England, and the quarters were cramped. Quarters were so tight that it was suggested that if there were any couples wanting to marry, they should do so on the ship to make easier accommodations. Fifty couples, including Niels Peter and Helene decided to do just that. They were married on April 30, 1864 on board the ship.

They landed in New York on June 3, and after processing at Castle Garden, were on their way by steamer to Albany, New York. They then traveled by train to St. Joseph, Missouri, and by boat to Wyoming, Nebraska. It was there that they were outfitted for the journey to the Salt Lake Valley in the Isaac Canfield company. On the trek Niels became ill with mountain fever, and Helene suffered sunstroke, each nearly losing their life. They arrived in the valley on October 5, 1964.

Niels Peter had joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints when he was fifteen. He served a mission in his native Denmark, with Helene being among his converts. When they arrived in Utah they settled in Milton, Morgan County. They then moved to Huntsville where they lived for sixteen years. While in Huntsville there began to be talk of Niels taking a second wife. They were acquainted with Marie Larsen, another Danish emigrant, and Helene was fond of her. She approached Niels and suggested that if he wanted to take another wife, she would like it to be Marie. They proposed to Marie together, and she soon joined the family.

Niels worked at many different jobs to support his family. He farmed, built meeting houses, schoolhouses, bridges, and worked on the road through Ogden Canyon. He was a hard worker.

Both Helene and Marie gave birth to large families. Marie's health was delicate though, and in 1884 she died at the age of thirty-seven of consumption. Before she passed away, she asked Helene to raise her children, which she gladly agreed to do. It was said that Helene treated Marie's children as her own and was a kind and loving mother to them.

Niels was a faithful ward teacher with a soft-spoken disposition. He was very honest and a strict tithe payer. He was the father of nineteen children, with thirteen living to adulthood and marrying. He has a large posterity today who honor him for the courage he had in leaving his life in Denmark for the new American church that he embraced.
