  Generelle notater:

John Lee headed home from his lovely evening with Eliza Taylor. It was New Year's Eve of 1897, and they had attended the local dance at the church together. After a pleasant visit with Eliza and her mother until midnight, he walked home by himself, thinking about the evening. Realizing that he was falling in love with Eliza, ". . . I stopped on the road and asked God to bless and guide me aright, and if it was according to his holy will and mind I would like to have Eliza Taylor for my wife. But I added that if it would bring harm or disgrace to her, or if she was not the right girl for me to have, to cause that something would come along and separate us, before we proceeded any further. And I believe with all my heart that God will hear and answer my prayer, and if nothing comes between us, I will think that she is indeed the right girl for me. I would be afraid to go with her, or marry her, unless I asked God in Heaven if it was right."

They were soon going everywhere together. "I am now Eliza's escort wherever she goes. I take her to dances, surprise parties, and everything else that transpires in the town . . ." The problem was that Eliza was fifteen and John was twenty-two. "What made it all the harder for me was because I was so old and she was so young. But still seven years isn't very much difference and I don't care if it is . . ."

It would be three years before John and Eliza married. Before he left for Idaho that spring to farm, they spent a quiet Sunday evening together, and "we got to talking about the future, and how lonesome we would be away from one another so long. I got a piece of paper and wrote out an agreement which she signed. In that agreement she promised to be my wife in two years. Of course it was only fun, but I am going to keep the paper all the same. I put my arm around her and told her I loved her better than all the world. I told her if she would be true to me while I was gone, I would be true to her . . ."

John and Eliza were married on February 6, 1901 in the Salt Lake Temple. She had just turned eighteen, and he was twenty-five. And so their married life together began. Taken from John Lee Journal.
